Which tactics does the site reward?
Because you cannot reposition freely or add light, a handful of Fuvahmulah-specific habits do more for your images than any gear upgrade.
- Get low and get close, then closer. Rest on the sand, go to the widest end of your lens, and minimise the water between you and the shark — with no strobe, every extra foot of water costs you colour and contrast. On a fisheye a shark even a few feet off becomes a speck.
- Shoot upward, not just forward. Tigers frequently rise from below and pass between you and the surface, silhouetted against the sun. That upward frame — the shark’s pale underside against a bright water column — is a signature Fuvahmulah shot and it is free on ambient light.

When not to bring the big rig

A large underwater rig is a task load, and on the tiger dive your first job is holding a stable kneel while a five-metre predator passes close. If the camera competes with that job, the camera loses.
